sindhi Ajrak


Ajrak of Sindh is a hallmark of the Indus Valley civilization of the province of Sindh. Ajrak is
different and unique form of block printed shawls and scarf. Ajraks are worn by girls as well as
boys. It is mainly symbol of sindhi culture that shows honor and prestigious but it is also popular
over Punjabi and seraiki people. Different beautiful designs are patterns are made by using
stamps of block printing. Main colors of ajrak are brown, red, blue, black, yellow and green.
Different fabrics are used according to weather and purchasing power. Varieties of Ajraks are
available in market on different prices and qualities.

In interior Sindh ajrak is worn as a security for girl. It is used as a respect for girls if they wear
ajrak. By wearing girls feel more comfortable becz ajrak covers them fully. Men mostly use it
as turban and showing the feeling of love towards Sindh. Men wind it around their shoulders or
simply drape it over one shoulder. Ajraks are usually about 2.5 to 3-meters long. Ajrak boost
confidence, self esteem and repect of sindhi people.

Ajraks are often presented as gifts of hospitality to guests. They are also worn on festive
occasions such as weddings and cultural events. Especially bride when she leaves her parents
home than she wears ajrak and go to his spouse house. Many prominent politicians from Sindh
publicly adorn Ajrak, including the deceased former Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto.

It is very commonly spread on the beds as bed sheet and coverlet. Ajraks are available in yardage
as well as stitched into tablecloths and matching napkins, curtains and bedspeads with matching
cushion and pillow covers. Nowadays ladies use ajrak as their dresses. Boys make shirts of
ajrak.
